Ask it plainly, because it deserves a plain answer. The shastra ties the fruit of a ritual to three things: the sankalp that names who it is for, the mantra chanted correctly, and the muhurat it is performed in. The physical body of the yajman is not on that list, and it never was.
This is not a rule bent to fit video calls. A son has always been able to perform his father's shraddh from another city. A family has always been able to have a shanti puja done for a member lying ill at home. The pind daan at Gaya is offered for someone who is no longer present at all. The sankalp names the person, the gotra places them in their lineage, and the ritual reaches them. That mechanism is older than the aeroplane, let alone the smartphone.
So what does the video call actually change? Not the validity. It changes what you can see. You hear your own name spoken in the sankalp. You watch the samagri go into the fire. You know the ritual happened, in full, because you were looking at it. That is the honest value of doing it this way, and it is worth a great deal.

Ujjain's own ritual, rarely available elsewhere
When the same trouble repeats across three generations — illness that has no cause, childlessness, money that never stays — the elders in the family usually already suspect pitra dosh. Tarpan and shraddh vidhi are performed on the Shipra bank. This is the ritual most often booked by children for parents who cannot travel, and it can be done in the parent's name while they simply watch.

There is no general dosh this is aimed at; it is done for peace of mind, for health in the house, and before anything important is begun. Shravan Somvar and Pradosh are the days people ask for, and those need booking well ahead.

Not every difficulty traces to one graha. When the chart shows several planets weak or afflicted at once, or when a hard dasha has begun, the shanti is done for all nine together — each with its own samidha, its own mantra count and its own offering. Which grahas need the most attention is decided from your chart, not applied uniformly.
The anushthan families turn to when someone is seriously ill, facing surgery, or recovering slowly. The mantra is counted — commonly a sava lakh, one and a quarter lakh repetitions — and completed with havan. It runs over days rather than hours, and you are shown the sankalp at the start and the purnahuti at the end.
Manglik is the word that stops more marriage talks in India than any other. Often the dosh is real and needs shanti; sometimes it cancels out against the other chart and nothing is needed at all. Both charts are read first and you are told honestly which case yours is. Where kumbh vivah is genuinely indicated, it is performed — and where it is not, you are told that too.

You live in another Indian city. Indore, Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur — the muhurat lands on a Tuesday morning and you cannot take the day off. This is the ordinary case, and it is the most common one.
The puja is for an elder. Parents and grandparents who cannot travel still need Pitra Dosh Shanti, Maha Mrityunjay Jaap or Navgrah Shanti done for them. The ritual is taken in their name; they only need to be on the call, and sometimes not even that.
The muhurat is close. When the correct tithi is three days out and you are two thousand kilometres away, an online sankalp is not a compromise — it is the only way the muhurat is reachable at all.
